A Discipline interview to Luca Nichetto

- What is your personal definition of “discipline”?
Discipline is synonymous for respect. Respect for things and for people. It means caring for the world and protect it, that for a long time has been abused. And then the respect for people, value of relationships and rediscover that everyone can gain from behaving civilly.
- Which is your favorite natural material? Why?
I love all the materials, used carefully they can donate all theirs value. I haven’t a preferred material, but for my venetian origins i have an emotional bonds with glass.
- What should be the aim of design today?
Quality of the product. A durable product made with the care for materials and of production processes. A quality product promotes the research and the good production and discourages the easy consumption in the short term. I think that today it’s important to produce well, and it is also necessary to produce less. This kind of production is possible especially in Italy where companies are small with a craft tradition and mainly related to a real “know-how”.

MADE IN NATURE

Lightness and strength, flexibility and hardness. It is Asia’s symbol. Someone call it green gold, but available for everybody. Its value comes from its many functions: you can use it to build great bridges and buildings or fine paper, strong tables or comfortable shoes. Its transport and production are easy and ecologically sustainable. Its cultivation protects and doesn’t impoverish its land. The plant is long-lived and grows naturally up to a meter a day. It needs only time and respect. Therefore, Bamboo is a symbol of Discipline.
